Description
VIGÉE, L.-J.-B. Ninon de Lenclos, comedy in one act, in verse, followed by Poésies fugitives. Paris, Everat, 1797. In-8, (7)-213 pp, table and (1) pp. contemporary fawn calf, smooth spine decorated (binding slightly rubbed). Only 2 entries in the CCFr. A handwritten note by the bookbinder in pencil at the beginning of the work suggests that this was the author's own copy or a gift from the author. False title: "OEuvres diverses de L. J. B. E. Vigée". An original poem on the acacia. Louis-Jean-Baptiste-Etienne Vigée (1758-1820), brother of the painter Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun and son of the pastellist Louis Vigée, man of letters and playwright from the end of the Ancien Régime to the Restoration, was protected by aristocratic circles close to Calonne and the Countess of Provence. Director of the Almanach des Muses from 1789, he lived through the Revolution by adapting his political positions until the Empire and the Retour des Lys. However, he ended his life in disgrace, discredited by his political opportunism.
