Description
WIER, Jean. ERASTUS, Thomas. [followed by] Two dialogues by Thomas ERASTUS Professor of medicine at Heidelberg, concerning the power of witches, & the punishment they deserve. Geneva, Jacques Chovet or Chouet, 1579. In-8, (16)-875-(39) pp. 17th century basane, spine with 3 nerves, gilt title, box decorated with small gilt irons and fillets, marbled edges (binding tired, hinges split, quires out of order, marginal tear with small lack of text on page 47, tear pp. 564, a few stains, pages incorrectly numbered). Very rare. This Geneva edition of the work by Jean Wier (1515-1588), personal physician to the Duke of Cleves and opponent of the witch-hunt, is the only one to include the dialogues of Erastus and the entire text. A very precise and curious treatise on demonology. The treatise by the medical theologian Thomas Erastus (Thomas Lieber) appears here for the first time in French with its own dated title, as well as several chapters by Jean Wier, all in continuous pagination. The work is said to have been translated from Latin by Jacques Grévin (1538-1570), physician to Marguerite de France, French playwright and poet, and friend of Ramus, Du Bellay and Ronsard. Guaita, 1087. Caillet, 11432. Not found in Dorbon.
