Eighteenth century poetry. BOOKS WITH FIGURES. Nice set of 8 titles of 18th century poetry books, illustrated with engraved figures. Including PRUD'HON. BERNARD. OEuvres de P. J. Bernard, ornées de gravures d'après les dessins de Prud'hon, la dernière estampe gravée par lui-même. A Paris, de l'Impr. de P. Didot l'aîné, An V-1797. Large in-4, (2) ff, XI-198 pp, black etchings. 19th century half-bronze, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (some rubbing, partial gap at spine, liminary ff. a little browned). Illustrated with 4 figures under serpents after Prud'hon, of which 3 engraved by Beisson and Copia, and the last one, "Phrosine et Mélidore", engraved by Prud'hon. Copy on vellum, with good margins, the figures with the letter. Cohen, 133. Works illustrated by Eisen, Marillier, Le Prince or Sève... Attached: CHENIER (Marie-Joseph). OEuvres diverses et inédites... La Bataviade, poëme épique ; l'essai sur les principes des arts, poëme ; discours en vers sur l'intérêt personnel ; l'Art poétique d'Horace, traduits en vers ; la Poétique d'Aristote, traduite en prose,etc... Brussels, Weissenbruch, 1816. Contemporary half basane with small green vellum corners. Complete with engraved frontispiece portrait. Only one entry in the CCFr (BnF). Absent from Vicaire. (8)-CXXXIV-263/6 pp. Member of the Convention, of the Conseil des Cinq Cents. Author of tragedies and famous lyricist of revolutionary songs including "Chant du départ" and the verses of the Children of the Marseillaise, brother of the pre-romantic poet André Chénier. Born in Istanbul (Turkey), died in Paris. Partly original work by the Conventionnel de la Revolution, of which only the prose is usually found.
