Description
UNITED STATES. AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE.
EXAMINATION of the Government of England compared with the Constitutions of the United States. Where some assertions are refuted... By a New-Jersey Farmer...
A Londres, A Paris, Chez Froullé, 1789.
In-8, VIII-291 pp, woodcut headband and endpapers. Contemporary fawn basane, smooth spine decorated, red pdt, gilt fillets framing the boards (slight wear and minor oxidation, a small hole in the binding on the first board).
French original, which appears to be the only one, translated by Faure (according to the BnF notice which indicates a probable error with Fabre) on the American original of 1787 and accompanied by important notes by Dupont de Nemours, Condorcet and Gallois (according to "Le Patriote français" of 25 Oct. 1790, BnF) who, in the pre-revolutionary context, would have sought to publish a work that would strike a harsh blow at the ruling elite.
One of the first books on the American Constitution, arguing against the British Constitution and the separation of powers.
A single record in the CCFr (BnF) confirms a problem of attribution.
William Livingston (1723-1790), often given as the author, was one of the signatories of the US Constitution and Governor of New Jersey. However, according to a note left by Thomas Jefferson in his own copy (Library of Congress), the work should be attributed to John Stevens...
The London address is wrong; the work was printed in Paris.
Sabin, 41646.
