Description
BRETON, André (1896–1966). 2 handwritten letters ‘André Breton’, Paris 1950–1953, to Jean MARKALE; 1 page in-4 each, the second bearing the letterhead and address of the A l’Étoile gallery, sealed. Note: 24 April 1950. He declines the invitation to contribute to the newspaper *Lettres du Monde*: ‘I do not agree with the way in which *Le citoyen du Monde* [Garry Davis] was handled. Without any authorisation, this newspaper reproduced a speech of mine which had previously been printed in *La Gauche* in a highly inaccurate manner […] I know I am not the only one whose signature is thus extorted. These are tactics which rob me of all confidence – even on a globalist level – in those who employ them’… 13 February 1953. ‘Those Celtic poems you showed me are very fine’; Breton would like to see the others: ‘Wouldn’t it be a good idea to publish a few of them, which you could present, in the first issue of *La Mante surréaliste* that is due to appear shortly?’ He suggests meeting either at his home or at *L’Étoile scellée*…
