Description
GAMBETTA, Léon (1838–1882). Autograph letter signed ‘Léon Gambetta’, San Sebastián, 7 April 1871, to a friend; 2¼ pages, in-8. Description: A fine letter written during the Paris Commune. He would not return to France ‘until such time as we are able to march straight into Paris; but as soon as the gates are open, I shall set off. […] For the time being, here are my proposals. To await the outcome of the struggle, which can only be lamentable, but whose worst effects we shall be able to avert thanks to the recent municipal elections. Once established in Paris, to set out a political line, to rally to our cause all the young and vigorous elements of the Republican Party, and, to achieve this aim effectively, to secure a proper newspaper ’… He is in negotiations with a financier in Versailles, but the matter is not yet finalised. He will inform him as soon as possible: ‘this time we shall not be boarding a boat but a fine ship’…
