Description
MUSSOLINI, Benito (1883–1945).
Autograph manuscript signed ‘Mussolini’, Rome, 20 December 1922; 3 pages, small quarto, on letterhead bearing the heading ‘Il Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri’ (small pinholes at the corners); in Italian.
Description:
Speech commemorating the assassination of the Fascist activist Federico Guglielmo Florio, killed in Prato on 11 January 1922 by a Communist.
One of the most harrowing and saddest days of Mussolini’s life was the day he was informed of the heinous assassination of our dear, great and intrepid Federico, whose sacrifice paved the way for the advent of Fascist Italy: ‘One of the most unsettling and sorrowful days of my life was the day I was told of the brutal murder of our dear, great, intrepid Federico! I say “our” because he belonged to all of us; he belonged to Fascism; above all – always and everywhere – he belonged to Italy! […] His Italy, Fascist Italy, is now a fait accompli. Immortal glory […] to Federico, one of the first – who, through their ineffable sacrifice, paved the way […] for these events!”…
This manuscript was exhibited at the 1932 Mostra del Fascismo (as indicated by a stamp on the reverse of the last page).
