Contemporary red morocco, smooth compartmentalised spine, gilt title and metalwork, gilt fillet, scroll and fleurons on the covers (minor, insignificant wear to the binding, a few foxing spots). Bibliography: Cohen, 931. Description: First separate edition, regarded as the original of Bernardin de St-Pierre’s famous pre-Romantic masterpiece. The text first appeared in *Études de la Nature* in 1788. A fine edition prepared by Pierre-François Didot, on laid paper. A complete copy including the four fine copperplate engravings in black, after Moreau the Younger and Vernet, by Girardet, Mihalbou and de Longeuil. In a fine contemporary binding.
