Description
HÉLYOT. A History of the Monastic, Religious and Military Orders, and of the Secular Congregations of Both Sexes, which have been established to date. Containing their origins, their foundation, their development, the most significant events (...) with illustrations depicting all the different habits of these orders and congregations. Paris: published by Jean Baptiste Coignard, 1714–1721. 8 volumes, small quarto. 19th-century fawn half-calf, decorated ribbed spine, title label and gilt title (slight wear from use, a few foxing spots). Description: First edition. Several hundred plates, some fold-out, engraved in black. They depict the costumes of various monastic, religious and military orders, sometimes including their decorations, engraved by Duclos, Giffart, de Poilly and Thomassin. This work was the most comprehensive on the subject at the time. Hélyot died in 1716; the last three volumes of his work were published posthumously. Attractive typographical mark featuring Coignard’s numeral and motto on the title pages.
