Contemporary marbled fawn calfskin with pebbled grain, plain spine decorated with a black title label and volume number, three gilt fillets framing the covers, a gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roulette on the endpapers, gilt edges (blunted corners, a small, discreet wormhole on the spine, some scuffing on a few edges and endpapers, a few oxidised pages, slight marginal foxing throughout). Bibliography: Cohen, 551. Rochambeau, Fables, 101. Description: A fine copy. Famous edition of the Fables, entirely engraved on copper. Richly illustrated by Fessard for the figures and by Montulay and Drouet for the text. The illustrations comprise an engraved title page in each volume, a frontispiece in the first volume, and 243 copperplate engravings in black after Monnet, Bardin, Bidauld, Caresme, Desrais, Houel, Kobell, Le Clerc, Leprince, de Loutherbourg and Meyer, 243 vignettes at the head of each piece and 226 end-piece illustrations. One of the finest editions of La Fontaine’s Fables in its contemporary binding. Ex libris of Louis Paris (19th-century archivist) on one endpaper. Stamp.
