Contemporary fawn porphyry sheepskin, smooth, decorated spine, fawn title label, three gilt fillets framing the covers, gilt embossed coat of arms in the centre of the covers, gilt fillet on the edges, marbled edges (slight scuffing to the binding, marginal foxing on a few leaves).  Bibliography: Brunet, III, 1440. Cohen, 688. Description: First edition. *Bélisaire*, a philosophical novel that sparked fierce controversy, by Jean-François Marmontel, about a Byzantine general under Emperor Justinian, followed by philosophical fragments by the author, *Fragments on the Moral Philosophy of Glory*. A fine copy in its contemporary binding. The illustrations consist of a frontispiece and three plates after Gravelot, engraved in black on copper by Massard, Le Veau, Levasseur and Masquelier.
