Small 12mo, 222 pp.–(4) ff, including a table of contents. Contemporary red morocco, ribbed spine decorated with a dotted gold title, gilt edges, wide gold lace on the covers, gilt edges on marbled paper (some scuffing and scattered small foxing spots).
Description:
A lovely devotional manuscript with a beautiful frontispiece in pen and wash, in its contemporary binding.
Entirely written in brown ink, with the text framed.
The frontispiece draws on the symbolism of the memento mori, depicting Christ on the cross, his foot encircled by the serpent of the underworld and a skull and tibia evoking the vanities of life.
