Description
BARBEY D’AUREVILLY. L’Ensorcelée. Paris, Alexandre Cadot, 1855. 2 volumes in-8, (4)- II-301 pp., 3 etchings and (4)-332 pp., 1 f. of errata. 19th-century red half-maroquin with Jansenist corners, ribbed spine, author’s name, title, volume number and date in gold, gilt head [Lemardeley] (spine slightly faded, slight soiling on the lower cover of vol. 2). Description: First edition of one of the author’s masterpieces. Illustrated with an etched frontispiece portrait and two etchings by Félix Buhot Provenance: engraved bookplate by Edouard Schuck (label on the upper inside cover of volume 1). The text of *L’Ensorcelée* is followed by a short story entitled *Ricochet de conservation*. It was reprinted in 1874 in *Les Diaboliques*, under the title: *Les Dessous de cartes d’une partie de whist*. A fine copy in a morocco binding signed by Léon Lemardeley. “A very important work, of great rarity” (Carteret, I, 105–106).
