Description:
A rare early Russian book.
Full margins. Printed on very thick laid paper.
Complete set.
An illustrated account of the ceremony held on 5 February 1626 to mark the marriage of Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich (1596–1645), the first of the Romanovs of Russia, to Eudoxia Streshneva (1608–1645).
This volume, compiled and edited by Platon Petrovich Beketov (1761–1836), is one of the most famous works of his career as a historian and scholar.
The account, combining text and illustrations, describes in detail the preparations for the ceremony, the banquet and the wedding night, as well as the couple’s early days together.
Based on a historical manuscript, it describes the entire ceremony and the various Orthodox rites that took place during it.
It appears that only a few copies remain in circulation: two years after this publication, Beketov’s printing works and stock were destroyed in the Great Fire of Moscow, which was set to combat Napoleon’s army in 1812.
Hand-coloured at the time, here in wash.
Modern Russian ex-libris in pencil on the half-title page.
