DAUDET, Alphonse. Fromont the Younger and Risler the Elder: Parisian Customs. Paris, L. Conquet, 1885. 2 volumes, large 8vo, (2) folios, XXIV–294 pp. and (2) folios, 368 pp. Contemporary wine-coloured morocco, spine with raised ribs, geometric framing of multiple gilt fillets on the panels, covers and endpapers, double gilt fillet on the headbands and footbands, gilt edges, original cover preserved [Chambolle-Duru]. Description: An illustrated edition comprising 12 copperplate engravings by Massard after Emile Bayard. Beautifully bound in an elegant morocco leather binding signed by Chambolle-Duru. A single print run of 500 copies; of which 150 are on Imperial Japanese paper (the only large-format paper used), this being no. 52. Each engraving is presented in two states in black: before and after the lettering. A masterpiece by the author, this realist novel was a success and even inspired several film adaptations.
