Description
LA BRUYÈRE. La Bruyère’s *Characters*, followed by Theophrastus’s *Characters*. Translated from the Greek by the same author. Paris: Lefèvre, 1822. 2 volumes in-8, (5)-434 pp. and (4)-490 pp. Red morocco decorated with a large monogram featuring scrolls and a royal crown, both gilded, on each cover; plain spine decorated with panels of gilded fillets, title and volume number gilded, gilded scroll pattern on the inner covers, moiré endpapers, gilded edges (some scuffing, leather slightly faded and one cover slightly worn, a few stains and rubs, one endpaper leaf cut off in Volume I). Note: Probably a gift copy bearing the large gilded crowned monogram ‘LPO’ for Louis-Philippe d’Orléans. A fine copy printed on laid paper with an engraved frontispiece portrait.
