Conquet, 1884. 3 volumes, large 8vo, (3) folios including the author’s portrait, XXIV–324 pp., (2) folios, 338 pp. and (2) ff., 323 pp. Red morocco, raised ribbed spine decorated with a gilt fillet, author’s name, title, volume number and date in gilt, mosaic framing with a geometric pattern on the panels, covers and endpapers, gilt edges on endpapers, guilloché-cut edges, original covers preserved [Chambolle-Duru] (spine very slightly tarnished, very slight scuffing). Bibliography: Carteret, Illustrés IV, 368. Vicaire I, 456–457. Description: First illustrated edition of *The Red and the Black*. Illustrated with 80 etchings by Henri-Joseph Dubouchet, including a portrait of Stendhal based on the painting by Dedreux-Dorcy and numerous figures within the text. A verbatim reprint of the first edition, with a preface by Léon Chapron. A single print run of 500 copies, including 150 special edition copies on extra-large in-8 raisin-sized Japanese paper; this copy is no. 52, with full margins. This copy is enhanced with a suite of engravings in the ‘avant la lettre’ style. A fine copy in an elegant binding by Chambolle-Duru.
