Bibliography: Carteret, II, 337. Vicaire, VII, 567. Description: Collective first edition of which only 60 proof copies were printed on large-format paper. One of the 50 numbered copies on Holland paper, this one being no. 35 in a fine contemporary half-maroquin binding signed by Carayon. A major collection of short stories regarded as the manifesto of Naturalism. Contains six short stories centred on the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, published under the name of Zola’s house, which he purchased in 1878 and where he hosted close literary friends, who came to be known as the ‘Medan Group’.
