Description
NAPOLEON III (1808–1873). Autograph letter signed ‘Napoleon’, W[ilhelmshöhe], 11 December [1870], to Marianne WALEWSKA; 1 page, in-8 format, bearing the crowned ‘N’. Description: Letter from the prisoner to his former mistress. The letter will be delivered to her by Mr LEVERT, former Prefect of Marseille, ‘a most devoted and distinguished man’. He is to discuss with you the steps that need to be taken with General CHANGARNIER to ensure he remains supportive of my cause. I would ask you to arrange a meeting for him with the general’...  Enclosed are Emperor Napoleon’s Proclamation to the French People (8 February 1871), and the declaration of 15 August 1873 by his son and successor (with his photograph).
