Description
ROUSSEAU Jean-Jacques (1712–1778). Letter from the author ‘Rousseau’, Monquin, 14 March 1770, [to the Marquis de BEFFROY, Governor of Bourgoin]; 1 page, folio. Note: At the top of the letter, Rousseau wrote the following quatrain:                                        ‘Poor blind souls that we are! Heaven, unmask the impostors                                            And force their barbaric hearts To open up to the gaze of men’”… Rousseau asks Beffroy to have a parcel delivered to the Chevalier de Menon, and thanks him ‘for all the kindnesses with which you have showered me during my stay in this country; my wife, who, like myself and your own family, and those whom the Marquise has not disdained to honour, joins her thanks to mine, and whilst the fear of stirring up our regrets and undermining the resolutions we have made prevents us from coming to seek your instructions and fulfil this duty in person, we both implore you to be assured that it is no less dear to our hearts”…
