Contemporary ivory-coloured Bradel vellum binding, gilt edges, gilt garland on the half-backs, front cover preserved. Binding inscribed ‘Bound for the Louis Conard bookshop’. Limited edition of 300 copies; this is one of the 200 in-8 ‘Jésus’ copies on Arches vellum, featuring the ‘avant la lettre’ version of the plates. Illustrated with 26 etchings by P.-A. Laurens, engraved in colour by Decisy using colour registration, comprising: 8 frontispieces, 15 vignettes within the text; the artist’s signature engraved on all the etchings. In a fine vellum binding with a design finely painted in watercolour by Malassis. Signed and dated on the front cover. An Orientalist-style scene depicting a view of Venice on the front cover, a landscape on the back cover, and a Neo-Gothic ornament with the title on the spine. Paintings by Edmond Malassis (1874–1944), a watercolourist and pupil of Gustave Moreau. Bound in fine with the subscription form printed in red and black, illustrated with a colour print featuring a detail from one of the book’s plates. The whole is protected in an antique embroidered silk slipcase (floral motifs). Well-used. A few pinholes, only on the sides, and slightly more pronounced on the first section. A trace of water damage on the side of a few pages. Very slight shrinkage of the vellum on the covers.
