BLAEU (William and John). The Theatre of the World, or New Atlas containing the Maps and Descriptions of All the Countries of the Earth. Amsterdam, William and John Blaeu, 1635. Folio, atlas comprising an engraved frontispiece and 46 engraved double-page maps. Contemporary full Dutch vellum binding, richly decorated covers, plain decorated spine, brown title label. Handwritten ‘Caminade’ bookplate on the title page and ‘Ad alta per laborem’ bookplate. A very incomplete copy comprising only the 46 maps relating to France (out of 48, excluding the maps of Anjou and Maine), including the large fold-out map of Charlemagne’s Empire and a duplicate of the map of the Sovereignty of Dombes. All the maps and the frontispiece are enhanced with period colours; the entire volume is mounted on tabs. (incomplete, numerous defects, traces of water damage, creases, foxing, wear and tear, cut-outs and repairs to the binding, added title page)
