Manuscript of a *Dalail al-Khayrat* by al-Jazuli Ink, pigments and gold on paper Maghreb, Algeria, late 18th century 9.5 x 7.8 x 2.5 cm The text of the *Dalail al-Khayrat* begins with an illuminated, polychrome bifolio, in which the opening lines are written in gold within cartouches framed by polychrome and gold scrollwork on a blue background. It then features text written in Maghribi script in brown ink with touches of polychrome and gold, arranged in seven lines per page, within gilded and blue border lines. The prayer book is interspersed with illuminated cartouches, and a few illuminated vignettes and notes in the margins. It also contains a bifolio illuminated with miniatures of Mecca and Medina. The colophon bears (in very small type) the date 26 Jumada al-Thani in the year 1195 AH (1781 AD). The manuscript opens and closes with a few folios containing text spread over fifteen lines, written in black ink (with some words in red or gold), within red border lines. The first folios begin with an ascending genealogy of the Prophet (tracing back to Adam and Eve), followed by prayers. The folios at the end of the manuscript contain a compilation of hadiths. This text, which is very popular throughout the Muslim world, is a compilation of prayers concerning the Prophet, written by Muhammad ibn Suleyman al-Jazuli (Patron Saint of Marrakesh). Reciting these prayers was believed to bring good fortune to the believer. The full title of the work, *Dala’il al-Khayrât wa Shawariq Al-Anwar fi Dhikr al-Salat ’ala al-Nabi al-Mukhtar*, can be transcribed as ‘Guidance on Good Deeds and Radiant Lights Concerning the Prayer in Honour of the Chosen Prophet’.
