Description
[SARTRE (Jean-Paul)]. Set comprising 2 signed autograph letters addressed to Wanda Kosakiewicz, also known as Wanda Olivier or Marie Olivier (one envelope preserved, sent by airmail from Oslo). - 8 July 1971, “My love, So here I am in Colmar, in a social housing estate set back a little way, two kilometres from the town – a housing estate with a population of around ten to fifteen thousand, with ten-storey ‘mini-skyscrapers’ and other six-storey blocks, all of it hideously white. I’m actually staying with a secondary school teacher (thirty years old and, naturally, a Maoist) but a discreet sort: he’s given me a room, asked what I needed (nothing), given me the key to the library where, just like at home, there are plenty of *Pléiades* volumes and [...] *La Famille*, and then I can hear him but can’t see him. I’ll invite him over for lunch one of these days, seeing as term’s almost over. Apart from that, my poor darling, my life is lonely but peaceful. I read, I go for walks in Colmar, which I love very much, but I miss you. It would be lovely, you know, for the two of us to go for a walk here; it’s very pretty—old houses, ‘Little Venice’, a lovely park (I’m not writing very well, not because of a relapse but because of the pencil I bought, having forgotten my pen in Paris) and the restaurants are very pleasant; we could have lunch there together. Anyway, I know it’ll happen eventually, but I’m getting a bit bored and, above all, I miss you. Twenty-year-old lads, on the other hand (yes, lads – don’t worry), come round every day to chat about politics whilst making me breakfast (I refused at first, but I realised they’d been told to do it and that I’d be hurting their feelings by refusing any longer). They’re nice but small-minded and a bit simple; I have to force myself to reply to them. I haven’t heard anything from Paris yet. Nor from you. Write to me, my darling; I really need your letters. I love you with all my heart.” - 7 July, “My love, Just a quick note to tell you that I love you and that I think of you all the time. My love, thank goodness we’ll be seeing each other [...] soon. I miss you and I’m simply bored. The journey was fine: just two travelling companions, both quiet (a Japanese man and a Pakistani man, both from the court). But on arrival, disaster: journalists and officials, dinner at the Hôtel de Ville. I’d have liked to go for a walk: impossible. In the evening, there was a meeting. I regretted it all the more as it rained cats and dogs all day the next day. We did, however, have lunch (officially) at the Sonia Hennie [sic] museum – you know, the figure skater. The museum doesn’t contain her skates, as you might think, but contemporary paintings (which were good). We had discussions and drew up a programme. Today the weather’s lovely, but work has started. I did manage to find time (miraculously on my own) to see a beautiful park with old wooden houses, a wooden church and the wooden boats in which the Vikings, in the 8th and 9th centuries, plied the seas. The day after tomorrow, [...] by plane (entertainment for the gentlemen, not for me). The work, on the other hand, looks alright. My love, where are you, what are you doing? Are you thinking of me? I’m hugging you with all my might. I love you. Enclosed is a set of 22 photographs, mainly featuring Marie Olivier – one with a dedication – and two featuring Jean-Paul Sartre; a programme from the Théâtre Antoine; a contract between Simone Berriau and Marie Olivier for a role at the Théâtre Antoine in *Morts sans sépulture*; an issue of the newspaper *Le Monde* dated 17 April 1980, ‘The Death of Jean-Paul Sartre’ (showing signs of wear and some pages missing), and *MALBY. Massie etc. Yverdon, Egraz, 1971, a paperback copy featuring a signed autograph dedication addressed to Wanda.
