Description
[ANONYMOUS]. *The Miserly Father, or The Misfortunes of Education*, containing an account of those of the colony on the Isle of C***. Paris, Desventes de Ladoue, 1770. 3 volumes in 12mo, in contemporary marbled sheepskin, smooth decorated spine, marbled edges (caps and corners worn with small losses, scattered foxing). First edition. A satirical response to Rousseau’s Émile, or On Education (1762). Whereas Émile is guided by a wise tutor, the author of The Miserly Father immediately mocks Rousseau’s adage that ‘the true tutor is the father’, for the narrator’s father, M. d’Erigny, who came from a poor background, became wealthy thanks to his friendship with a minister; his son was spoiled from a very young age. Whilst M. d’Erigny is drunk, his mistress makes him sign an order for 20,000 francs’ worth of precious stones from his jeweller, then slips away. The extravagant expenditure is discovered, and the father becomes miserly to the extreme. The son, then aged 15, is entrusted to an unscrupulous tutor who lures him into a scam and disappears with the money... A unique edition of this little-known work of fiction, part of which is set in America.
