Description
ANONYMOUS - EGYPTIAN AND ENGLISH LETTERS. Or Historical, Philosophical, Critical and Literary Correspondence on Unusual Subjects. Between an Egyptian sage and an English scholar. Amsterdam, Wetstein, 1742. In-12 half-calf with small post-caps, plain decorated spine (caps and corners worn, foxing). First and only edition of this collection of 22 letters exchanged between an Englishman named Walter and an Egyptian named Ynock. The author, who remains anonymous, uses the epistolary form to critically address various philosophical subjects, including religion, the Zoroastrian system, the mind, luxury, vanity, medicine, etc. In addition to the purely philosophical aspect, Caillet notes that this ‘work is filled with hermetic research. – On the virtue of names, their magical power. – On Gnostic abraxas and their meaning. – On the virtue of talismans, etc.’ (Caillet, 6635).
