Description
CATHERINE OF RUSSIA: The Hermitage Theatre of Catherine II, Empress of Russia; composed by the Princess herself, by several members of her inner circle, and by a number of foreign ministers. Buisson, 1799. 2 vols. in-8, later green half-cloth, initials A.D. on the front cover, marbled edges. (library stamp) First French edition published by Jean-Henri Castéra, shared with Gide in the same year. According to Barbier, the original edition appeared in Saint Petersburg in 1788–1789. The title pages of both volumes state that ‘these plays were written in French and performed by French actors at the Empress’s private theatre, known as the Hermitage, in the presence of the Empress and her close circle, in late 1787 and during the winter of 1788’. See Quérard’s lengthy article on this subject.
