DELISLE de SALES: On the Philosophy of Nature, or a Treatise on Morality for Mankind, Derived from Philosophy and Grounded in Nature. Third edition and the only one faithful to the original manuscript. London, 1777. 6 vols. in-8, in contemporary marbled calf, decorated raised spine, three gilt bands on the covers, marbled edges (some wear to caps, corners and edges). New and improved expanded edition (partly original), illustrated with a frontispiece, 12 unsigned plates, and 6 title vignettes (the title pages are entirely engraved). Fine printing. The first edition of 1770 was in only 3 vols. in-12. A multifaceted work devoted to the study of man, skilfully blending narratives, dialogues and plays (it even includes letters from the ‘Persian Letters’ quoted in full) with history, all in a consistently engaging read; the work has an unacknowledged encyclopaedic aim regarding the nature of man.
