Description
FLORIAN (de): Numa Pompilius, Second King of Rome. Didot the Elder, 1786. In-8, contemporary light brown sheepskin, smooth spine with decoration, three gilt bands on the covers, speckled edges (top cap and corners worn, slight marginal water stain and some foxing). Engraved frontispiece. First edition. This narrative is inspired by the life of Numa Pompilius (715–673 BC), the second legendary king of Rome. Like *Gonzalve de Cordoue* (1791), another novel by the author, this work follows in the tradition of the great heroic novels of the 17th century. It is illustrated with a frontispiece by Queverdo, engraved in intaglio by Dambrun. Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (Château de Florian near Sauve 1755–Sceaux 1794) is regarded as the finest French fabulist after La Fontaine.
