Description
GENARD (François): The School of Man, or A Comparison of Portraits of the Century and Paintings from the Holy Scriptures. London, 1752. 3 vols. in-12, in contemporary red sheepskin, decorated raised spine, gilt scrolls framing the covers, gilt edges (some discolouration of the leather, slight rubbing to the caps, corners and clasps). First edition of this work “which caused such a stir” (Barbier). Published anonymously under the anagram “De Gran…”, this satirical work written by François Génard (1722–1764) was immediately condemned. "One noted in this work impieties veiled by passages from Scripture. One could particularly make out the portraits of Louis XV, the Marquise de Pompadour, Prince Édouard, etc. The police seized the work and sought out the author; he was arrested and taken to the Bastille on 10 March 1752." Each volume is accompanied by a natural key to the portraits.
