Description
LE GENDRE (G.-Ch.): Treatise on Opinion, or Essays Contributing to the History of the Human Mind. Briasson, 1733. 6 parts bound in 10 volumes in-12 in contemporary brown calfskin, decorated raised spine, red edges (some worn caps and corners, scattered foxing). First edition. One folding plate in volume II and 4 astronomical figures in volume III. A remarkable work exploring the history of ideas, errors and prejudices across numerous fields of knowledge: scientific and philosophical systems, historical facts or various beliefs, chemistry, astrology and the occult sciences. “The perspective of this work is the science of doubt… when it is advantageous to suspend one’s judgement. It is a treatise on the opinions that have prevailed in the secular sciences; it is an attempt at moderate scepticism, & a new path to shape the mind through its own history…” A highly detailed table of contents spanning one hundred and eighty-six pages allows one to navigate at leisure through the countless subjects covered. Le Gendre (1668–1746), Marquis of Saint-Aubin-sur-Loire, was a councillor at the Parliament of Paris. Ruined by his speculation in the East India Company, his creditors sold off his estate upon his death, including the Château de Saint-Aubin. Brunet 3585, for the first edition of 1733. Quérard V, 94. Caillet 6401. A fine copy.
