Description
NOSTRADAMUS (César de): The History and Chronicle of Provence, in which the ancient poets, illustrious figures and families who flourished over the past five hundred years, as well as various lineages from France, Italy, Spain, Languedoc, Dauphiné and Piedmont, are presented from time to time in fine order. Rigaud, 1614. Folio in modern tan sheepskin (foxing, flaws in the portrait, small water stains, missing final leaves (last page: p.64 of the table of contents). 253 coats of arms, 2 medals and 1 vignette wood-engraved in the text, text surrounded by a black border. Beautiful engraved frontispiece title page with allegories of Aix, Arles, Avignon and Marseille. The first major work on Provence, the book is written in a formal, at times baroque style. Despite inaccuracies in certain genealogies, this history remains valuable for all the events witnessed first-hand by César de Nostradamus, notably the League uprisings in Provence. César de Nostredame was the son of the famous astrologer and physician; he devoted himself mainly to poetry, and *L'histoire de Provence* is his major work.
