Description
ORBESSAN (Marquis of): A Miscellany of History, Criticism, Physics, Literature and Poetry. Birosse, Toulouse, and Paris, Merlin, 1768. 3 vols. in-8, in contemporary marbled calf, decorated ribbed spine, coat of arms in the centre of the covers, speckled edges (rare foxing, a few very small marginal wormholes in vol. 3, armorial bookplate). Various works by the Baron d'Orbessan (1709–1801), who served as President of the Parliament of Toulouse. The first volume contains the history of the famous Roman general Lucullus; the second volume contains a detailed account of the author’s journey to Italy in 1749. The third volume brings together various interesting essays on subjects of ancient history, physics and natural history: “Essay on Sacred Serpents” (pp. 136–172), "Essay on Roses" (pp. 297–337), "Dissertation on the Violet" (pp. 338–357), "Memoir on Vesuvius" (pp. 358–377), etc. This volume is notably illustrated with 8 engraved plates, including 4 fold-out plates depicting archaeological artefacts. The 4th and final volume is missing. A fine copy bearing the coat of arms of the House of Arenberg (Belgium)
