Description
PALISSOT (Charles): *La Dunciade*, a poem in ten cantos. London, 1771. 2 vols. in-8, in contemporary pale calf, plain spine with gilt decoration, red edges. A work directed against the philosophers of the 18th century and the encyclopaedists. The first edition was published in 1764 under the title ‘La Dunciade, or The War of the Fools’. At that time, the poem consisted of only three cantos, in ten-syllable verse: a gallery of satirical portraits. The author then had what he called ‘the grand idea’ of extending it to ten cantos (the 2nd edition of 1771 and subsequent editions). Later, he expanded it further with tirades against Robespierre, Couthon, Saint-Just, Marat, etc. A fine copy.
