THOMAS Antoine-Léonard: The Complete Works of Thomas of the Académie Française. Verdière, 1825. 6 vols. in-8, in contemporary light brown half-calf, plain spine with decoration (foxing). Born in Clermont-Ferrand on 1 October 1732.A poet and critic, he is renowned for the eulogies he composed in honour of great men; he was awarded the Academy’s prize for eloquence five times: in 1759, 1760, 1761, 1763, 1765 with eulogies of Marshal Saxe, Chancellor d’Aguesseau, Duguay-Trouin, Sully and Descartes, which did not prevent him from winning the prize for poetry in 1762. A friend of philosophers, he was a regular at the salons of Mme Geoffrin, who supported him financially and bequeathed him a life annuity of 1,275 francs, as well as those of Mlle de Lespinasse and Mme Necker. He was a professor and member of the Académie de Lyon. A well-bound copy.
