LA HARPE: A Summary of the General History of Travel… Hôtel de Thou, 1780. 21 volumes in 8vo, in contemporary marbled calf, decorated ribbed spines, marbled edges (some caps and corners worn, coats of arms scraped from the centre of the covers). A complete copy including the plates but without the maps. La Harpe worked only on the first twenty-one volumes of the work, which we present here. The subsequent volumes, not included here, are by Abbé Delpuech de Comeiras. A compilation of the essential facts of the great voyages of exploration based on Abbé Prévost, the abridgement is divided into five parts: the voyages to Africa, those to Asia, those to America, voyages to the poles and voyages round the world; La Harpe then added the modern voyages (including those of Captain Cook): the voyages of Dampier, Carteret, Kaempfer, Bernier, Bruce, Norden, Anson, Bougainville, etc., bringing together a wealth of information on the history, manners and customs of the inhabitants of the explored continents.
