Description
TIRAQUEAU (André). De utroque retractu, municipali, et conventionali, commentarii duo. Lyon, Guillaume Rouille, 1566. In-folio, fawn half-basin, boards of reused parchment, smooth spine, red title page (18th century binding).
A treatise on lignal and conventional withdrawals in Poitevin custom, by André Tiraqueau (c. 1480-1558), a learned jurisconsult and humanist who was a close friend of Rabelais. The original appeared in Lyon in 1543.
Beautifully printed, with a fine set of ornate initials and woodcuts. Title set in a fine woodcut frame by Claude Bezoard after Pierre Vase, and medallion portrait of the author, accompanied by a Latin hexastichon by Victorius (Baudrier, t. IX, pp. 303-304).
Early handwritten bookplate on title: Sum Joannis Wolfgangi Contz.
Title trimmed short at edge. Paper a little yellowed. Scuffing to binding.
