Édouard DANTAN (1848-1897) The Death of Timophane (project), 1874 Oil on canvas (small holes) Signed and dated lower right 32.5 x 48 cm NOTE : Our painting is a study for the original work (114 x 146 cm) that Édouard DANTAN presented in 1874 at the competition for the Prix de Rome. The subject of the competition was The Death of Timophanes, an antique subject taken from Plutarch's Life of Timoleon. The artist received an honourable mention for this painting. In 1893, the painting joined the public collections of the Musée d'art et d'archéologie de Laon (inv. no. 990. 1709). It is currently in the Musée des Avelines, Musée d'art et d'histoire de Saint-Cloud.
