Description
The Richelieu Canal in Provence and its ancillary works.
Document signed by the company’s trustees and the deputy director; Paris, 9 May 1753, 1 folio page, with an engraved vignette at the top depicting the Richelieu Canal, dated 1752.
The holder of this title of ownership and partnership holds a perpetual interest in the Richelieu Canal and in the other parts of Mr Floques’s project in Provence, both in this undertaking, for a stretch of 9,600 metres by virtue of the privileges granted to the Maison d’Oppède for the diversion of the waters of the Durance…
A valuable record of a project that was partially carried out. Engineer Floquet aimed to channel the diverted waters of the Durance to Aix, Marseille and their surrounding areas.
Barjavel, *Historical Dictionary*… Volume 1, pp. 489–490, notes that Richelieu did not grant all the funds. Floquet, having complained a little too vehemently, was imprisoned by the minister in the Bastille, where he died.
