Description
[HISTORY, ECONOMICS, RELIGION, MISCELLANEOUS] Joly de Fleury, Jean-François (1718–1802). A Councillor of State, he held various posts. Letter dated 29 June 1738 to a correspondent, 2 pp., in-8°. He is interested in 12 manuscript volumes of the registers of the Chambre des comtes (sic), and wishes to know whether there are any tables for these volumes. We enclose 7 printed pages from his ‘Life’ taken from the Galerie française.
DE LA HAYE, Charles, provost of Château Thierry, late 17th century, handwritten letter, at Château Thierry, 11 November, 4 pp., in-4°, concerning the arrest of poachers and guards of His Highness (the Duke of Bouillon).
HERRENSCHVAUD, Jean-Frédéric, Doctor of Medicine. Autograph letter to Jean-François Panchaud, Paris, 27 February 1755, 2 pp., in-8°. Letter concerning the estate at Montauban which he had acquired and planted, and on which he was making poor business decisions that jeopardised the repayment of 3,000 écus to the seller, his correspondent. Of interest for the economic aspects of the transaction.
BURNAUD, L. Letter to Citizen Graffencier, Moudon, 4 April 1798, 1 p., in-4°, address on the spine. Concerning a decree on sequestration
ROSTOPTCHINE, Countess (… first name illegible). Speech, [Moscow?], 2 January 1858, 1 p. folio, in pencil. An interesting document: To those who took part in the banquet of 28 December [1857] (a dinner hosted by landless merchants, journalists, actors and professors to mark the improvement in the peasants’ living conditions).
The document relates to the issue of serf emancipation in Russia, from 1858 onwards. What follows is the countess’s curious speech, which is said to have been improvised on 2 January 1858, after she had read the speeches by Messrs Parloff, Katroff, etc.
Through demagogic ‘oukka’ (fish soup)
Through the glitz of idle chatter
Through praise offered in bad faith
And with a false sense of timing
You have shown your malice
When our rights were violated…
You shouted ‘hurrah!’ to the Tsar
But your clamour, your toast, was cunning!
Your ‘hurrah!’ is the allied flag
With which a shrewd privateer
To burn the rich, laden fleet
[…] its hostile cargo
[Viticulture – AUBONNE, SWITZERLAND] – LE COUTRE (probably the estate manager)
L. a. s., Aubonne, 8 November 1737, 4 pp., in-4°. An interesting letter concerning the grape harvest, the vineyards on the coast, the quality of the grapes, the date of the harvest, and wine prices (40 to 42 escublancs per cartload of 400 Bernese pots) …As for old wines, they are virtually priceless. He then gives news of Geneva, where there is great unrest amongst the common people due to an amnesty … whilst the lords ‘must call to arms…’
We enclose a series of letters bearing ARBERG postmarks, most of which are beautifully stamped
