Description
[AMERICANA] – Miss Wright. A Journey to the United States of America, or Observations on the Society, Customs, Practices and Government of that Country, gathered in 1818, 1819 and 1820, translated from the English based on the second edition, by J.-T. Parisot. Paris, published by Béchet and Arthus Bertrand, 1822, 2 volumes in 8°, xiv, 351; (vi), 359 pp, ochre Bradel-style cardboard binding with a red title label (original binding) Slight wear to both caps. Dedicated by Parisot to General Lafayette; ex libris Albt. Insinger. Frances Wright (1795–1852) was born into a wealthy family sympathetic to the ideas of the Physiocrats and the French Revolution. She made her first trip to the United States at the age of 23, in 1818. She then made a second trip in 1824 in the company of La Fayette, who had become her lover. She was known for her political commitments, which were close to those of the utopian socialists and the abolitionist movement.
