Eight in-8 volumes comprising XXIV, 365 pp., one map; (2) f., IV, 349 pp.; (2) ff., IV, 384 pp.; (4), IV, 349 pp., one map; (4), IV, 400 pp.; (4), IV, 336 pp., one plate; (4), IV, 366 pp., one map; (6), 244 pp., eight plates, contemporary binding in fawn-coloured grained calfskin, smooth spines richly decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, title and volume number labels in red morocco, gilt edges, marbled edges. First edition. Three maps and nine fold-out plates. A slight, insignificant stain at the bottom of the binding of vols. 1, 5 and 6; two worn corners on vol. 2; a small wormhole at the hinge of vol. 7; otherwise a fine copy. The author, a politician, scientist and philanthropist, is descended on his mother’s side from the author of the Maxims, the Duke of La Rochefoucauld (1747–1827). He played a leading role in the development of economic, social and political ideas towards the end of the Ancien Régime. His three-year journey is peppered with significant observations on the economy, the constitution and the customs of the United States.
