Description
CHAIX, Charles (1885–1973). Composer from Geneva. Signed autograph score of the instrumental part of his *Poème funèbre*, 18 pp., folio. Sent with the inscription ‘To Henri Darel in memory of Christmas 1923’.
Poème funèbre for orchestra, choir and soloists (in paradisium) by Charles Chaix, Op. 5.
Mobilised in 1914, he served throughout the campaign on the French front and in the East. It was under these circumstances that he wrote the entire instrumental part of the Poème funèbre, a work he completed on his return to Geneva. This poem is listed in the *Dictionnaire des Musiciens Suisses* (1964), pages 74–75.
The score contains additions in pencil and crossings-out. It comprises three sections, the first two numbered from 1 to 8, and the third numbered from 1 to 10:
I Dimitte ergo me
II Prepara te ad toleranda multa adversa
III Tuis autem fidelibus vita mutator non tollitur
In 1910, Charles Chaix was appointed to teach the harmony class at the Geneva Conservatoire. Subsequently, he was also entrusted, in turn, with teaching courses in transposition, advanced harmony, counterpoint and composition; he taught until 1961, and also gave courses in harmony, fugue and counterpoint at the National Conservatoire of Lyon (1924–1950).
