Description
PALLADIO (Andrea). Architecture. The Hague, Pierre Gosse, 1726. First volume (of 2), comprising 2 tomes in one folio volume, in red half-maroquin, with an ornate, gilt-lettered ribbed spine (later binding in the 18th-century style). New edition of the translation by the architect Nicholas Du Bois, published by the Venetian architect Giacomo Leoni, with notes by Inigo Jones. The illustrations comprise an allegorical frontispiece engraved by Picart after Riccio, a portrait of Palladio by Picart after Caliary, and 103 plates (out of 104; plate 26 of volume 1 is missing), most of which are full-page. Minor foxing; the last three plates in Volume 2 were formerly backed to repair a tear. An interesting edition of this major work by the Italian Renaissance architect.
