Description
[16th century]. CHARPENTIER (Jacques). *Artis analiticae, sive iudicandi descriptio*. Paris: Gabrielis Buon, 1561. A short, unbound pamphlet of 40 pages. Water-stains and slight creases.
Jacques Charpentier (1524–1574), professor of philosophy and medicine at the Collège Royal in Paris, was a fervent defender of traditional Aristotelianism in the 16th century. He is particularly famous for his heated intellectual debates with the humanist Pierre de La Ramée (Ramus), who challenged the authority of Aristotelian logic.
This manifesto deals with Aristotelian logic, and more specifically with the mechanisms of scientific demonstration and rational judgement (ars iudicandi). At that time, the term ‘analysis’ did not yet refer to analytical geometry or modern algebra (which would later emerge with François Viète and René Descartes), but to a rigorous method of logical decomposition enabling one to trace effects back to their causes in order to establish indisputable scientific truths.
