[Curiosa]. DELVAU (Alfred). A Modern Erotic Dictionary by a Professor of Obscene Language. 2nd edition, revised, corrected, considerably expanded by the author, and enriched with numerous quotations. Neuchâtel: printed by the company [Brussels: Jules Gay], 1874. In-18, 146 x 89: half-title, title page, XXIII, 402 pp. As is: unbound, missing the frontispiece. Dutel, 286. Second edition published in Brussels by Jules Gay. It is normally illustrated with a frontispiece by Félicien Rops on pasted laid paper, the same as that appearing in the first edition, and begins with a preface entitled ‘To Free Spirits’, which, according to Pierre Fayt, biographer of Alfred Delvau, by the poet and chansonier Jules Choux (1825–1874). According to Dutel, an edition appeared in 1871, published in the same city by Vital Puissant, but the 1874 edition is considered to be the true second edition of the text. Printed in a run of 500 copies; one of the 300 (no. 94) on small-sized English vellum with the frontispiece printed in black. According to Dutel, the copies on large-sized English vellum have the frontispiece printed in red chalk. Unbound copy.
