First edition - the Elzevier and Janssonius edition - of Golius's Arabic lexicon, which remained the reference dictionary for European Arabic studies until the publication of Freytag's dictionary in the 1830s. Golius based his dictionary on various Arabic lexicographical texts, the most important being al-Jawhari's Sahah and Firuzabadi's Qamus, but he also used geographical and zoological sources such as al-Damiri's work on animals. His dictionary also included Arabic words of foreign origin, particularly Turkish and Persian, which he translated directly from the source language, using Turkish and Persian glossaries. The work concludes with an exhaustive index containing some 10,000 entries. "The way in which Golius organised his dictionary, according to the Arabic root and the verbal and substantive forms with all their derivatives, remains the fundamental criterion for Arabic dictionaries in European languages" (Vrolijk & Van Leeuwen). The work was published simultaneously in four editions, differing only in the address of the printer. All mention Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevier as printers, one of which was apparently intended for their own distribution. For a long time, this was our best source on the Arabic language.
