ESAD EFENDI, Mehmet, Üss-i-Zafer (Victory Base), Constantinople, Shawwal 1243H./April 1828 In-8 (21.5 x 16.5 cm). Book in Ottoman Turkish printed in lithography. 25 lines per page in naskh script. 259 numbered pages, Frontispiece dated 1241H./1825. Oriental binding with flap and cover, decorated with a motif. Owner's stamp erased (Binding worn, a few small stains and freckles, not collated). Provenance: Bibliothèque orientaliste Maisonneuve, Paris An account of the destruction of the Janissaries by the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II in 1826. The backbone of the army, the Janissary corps was becoming a nuisance in the early 19th century. On 16 June 1826, Sultan Mahmud II ordered the Vaka-i Hayriye (auspicious event), the name given to the events that led to the destruction of the Janissary Corps by bombardment and the execution of the survivors.
