Description
ESAD EFENDI, Mehmet, Üss-i-Zafer (Victory Base), Constantinople, Shawwal 1243H./April 1828 In-8 (21.5 x 16.5 cm). Book in Ottoman Turkish printed in lithography. 25 lines per page in naskh script. 259 numbered pages, Frontispiece dated 1241H./1825. Oriental binding with flap and cover, decorated with a motif. Owner's stamp erased (Binding worn, a few small stains and freckles, not collated). Provenance: Bibliothèque orientaliste Maisonneuve, Paris An account of the destruction of the Janissaries by the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II in 1826. The backbone of the army, the Janissary corps was becoming a nuisance in the early 19th century. On 16 June 1826, Sultan Mahmud II ordered the Vaka-i Hayriye (auspicious event), the name given to the events that led to the destruction of the Janissary Corps by bombardment and the execution of the survivors. The popular masses prepared by the ulama came to reinforce the army, and the janissaries were massacred with cannonballs and set on fire in their barracks. Official historian, imperial historiographer, editor of the official gazette Takwim el-Waka'i and Qadi of Istanbul, Mehmed Esad Efendi had a collection of books containing more than 3,700 manuscripts, deposited in the Suleimaniye Public Library.
