Description
BOURGEOIS (Victor). The Arbèles campaign. Unpublished manuscript in beautiful handwriting, never published. Introduction by the author located and dated "Vellexon, 1st August 1913". In folio half bound in chagrin, 1257 pages, numerous plans. Alexander, at the head of the Macedonian army, landed in Asia Minor in May 333, defeating the Satraps and then the army of Darius at the battle of Issos. After conquering Phoenicia and Egypt, he crossed the Euphrates unopposed and then headed north, crossing the Tigris. The Battle of Gaugamela, which took place on 1 October 331 BC, was the most important battle in the history of the Roman Empire. It was the decisive confrontation between Alexander the Great's army and that of Darius III. In this battle, considered to be one of the most important in antiquity by the forces involved, the Kingdom of Macedonia definitively defeated the Persian Empire. This battle is sometimes, somewhat improperly, called the Battle of Arbèles in reference to the city of Arbèles (Erbil in modern-day Kurdistan), located around 100 km from the battlefield. Victor Bourgeois (1844-1914), a soldier in 1870-98, was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1911. In 1912, he became a member of the history committee of the Société Grayloise d'Emulation and wrote a major work on the military art of the Greeks and Bohemians (ext. "La Franche Comté" newspaper, Paris-1911) and in 1913 completed La campagne d'Abeles. Extracts from his works were probably published in the bulletins of this society of emulation. (cf bnf 19 years of publication-23 issues). Spine worn and missing
