Contemporary binding, full calf, spine with 5 raised bands, decorated with double gilt fillet and fleurons, morocco title page. illustrated with 5 engraved historiated headpieces and 5 lettrines, one music plate, 7fnc-324 pp. 4fnc table. The work is presented in four sections: a physical description of the country - the customs, laws and costumes of the inhabitants - their religion - King Naraile Grand (who reigned from 1656 to 1688), his court and his "much sought-after" kingdom (Hoefer), in the same way as the Description du Royaume de Macaçar du. Father Gervaise (1662-1729) was attached to the mission in Siam from a very early age and stayed there for four years (1681-1685), learning the language perfectly and learning about the country's religion, customs, literature, legislation and history. On his return to France, he was accompanied by two of the king's sons, whom Louis XIV entrusted with his education. He left on a mission to French Guiana in 1729, but was massacred on arrival by the Caribbean Indians along with his entire retinue. A fine copy.
